Cornbury Festival 2019

Mon Laferte performing

A Special thank you to the organisers of Cornbury Festival 2019. Choice Radio attended to what can only be described as a delicious day filled with great music and fun family activities. A special shout out goes to Nick Corston of STEAM Co. a passionate man with a flair for all things scientific. He showed us how to make paper rockets and fire them into space. (Thank you also for the Rocket Boys book!) We rocked to the Fun Lovin Crime Writers and swayed to Mon Laferte who were amazing bands and really got the crowd cheering. Choice Radio hopes to return in 2020!

We were spoilt for choice food wise from Pizza to Bagels!

An amazing setting deep in the heart of Great Tew, Oxfordshire!

Anyone for Shopping? You are simply spoilt for choice.

Choice Celebrates NHS 70

Choice Radio joined in the celebrations for the NHS reaching its 70th birthday on July 5th 2018, by providing live music in the foyer of the Worcestershire Royal on Saturday July 7th and Wednesday July 11th.
A group of Choice volunteers dispensed free copies of the station’s SMILE Magazine, ‘Take it Easy’; solicited requests from patients, visitors, RVS volunteers, and staff; and, played those requests live on air via the online service that the station now provides.

L to R: John Boardman, Tony & Barbara Deakin, Pete Phillips, and Roger Bartlett.

Over the two sessions, occupying a total of 6 hours, more than 20 requests for a wide range of music were played by presenters David Bower, Roger Bartlett and John Boardman, to the satisfaction of requesters and the enjoyment of patients throughout the hospital.

The fabulous David Bower playing requests.

Our sincere thanks go to Becky Bourne, Head of Communications, for facilitating this operation, and to senior communications officer Pete Orton for the photographs.
If you have an interest in becoming a volunteer at Choice Radio, and there is a wide variety of opportunities to serve in addition to presenting live shows, then do please visit the ‘Join Us’ section of our website.

Onwards to NHS 100!

Seth Bye and Sam Baldwin

Seth Bye and Sam Baldwin are two members of the four-piece band Gathering Tides, which itself it made up from members of the much larger Conservatoire Folk Ensemble in Birmingham.

Seth and Sam came down to the studio for an hour-long chat and live session with Pete Phillips in which they described how they go about creating this folk-fusion of many different styles of music and played some of their favourite tunes, including their current single Fire on The Mountain

The audio features the entire session including the recorded and live versions of their single plus a track on which they play from the the Conservatoire Folk Ensemble entitled “Tek Bir Gunesin Altinda Yuruyoruz” or, in English, “We march under one sun”

The video features three live tracks (download the AVI file and play it in Windows Media Player)

Both are available here:

Keith James

You won’t have heard of Keith James. But he has released some 13 albums over the last few years. And he has lived in a kind of “parallel universe” – his words!

He now has a “Best of ” double album Captured which neatly encompasses many of the themes of his work and his inspiration which comes from many other writers such as Federico Garcia Lorca, Leonard Cohen, Dylan Thomas and William Blake…

Keith chatted to Pete Phillips about the new album and where he has been for the last 4 decades…

You can hear the interview here (along with 4 tracks from the album – Floating Bridges, Nocturne, Anthem and The Mask):

David Baldwin

David Baldwin is an actor and writer who moved to Herefordshire some 20 years ago and created a touring theatre group, Bare Bones Theatre

That has now transformed into a group who write plays which are broadcast as podcasts and David came into the studio to chat to Pete Phillips about how it all came about

Sunday Supplement – Donna Taggart

Donna has an extraordinary story to tell. Whilst working for the NHS in Northern Ireland, this 31 year-old mother of two young children posted a music video for a song that she had made.
That song – Jealous Of The Angels – went viral, resulting in it being viewed no less than 130 million times and achieving top billing on various charts!
Donna chatted to Pete Phillips about how that meteoric rise to fame came about and the effect that it has had on her.

Going Wild Live

Going Wild with Wildlife with Stuart “The Wildman” Mabbutt is broadcast for an hour each day on Choice, but as a special treat, we organised a live show with Stuart and two of his colleagues, photographer William Mankelow and videographer Ross Arrowsmith
And a good time was had by all!

Anne is one of 70 members of the Birmingham Bach Choir, who will be performing at the Great Malvern Priory on Saturday June 16th and, later, at St Alban’s Church Highgate in Birmingham on June 30th, the programme this time consisting of acapella pieces from composers other than Bach such as Monteverdi and Gesualdo.

Anne chatted to Pete Phillips about the choir and the regular shows which they put on each year – and they are always looking for talented singers to join them too!
